I write sci-fi books like Galaxy Dog and there are lots of options for selling them as ebooks, such as Kobo and Amazon. But then I started thinking that there was no reason why I couldn’t have my own platform, and sell my books through it. A platform that I create myself will likely never get the number of visitors of an Amazon or a Kobo, but it will be mine, and I will have complete control over it.

I thought it was such a good idea that I put my money where my mouth was and bought myself a domain. I bought a site named SpiralcatBooks.com, and started setting it up as a sales platform.

I built the site based on a static site generator called Hugo that I have been having good experiences with, and plumped for a theme with the catchy name “hugo-shopping-product-catalogue-simple”. It comes ready populated with a site designed to flog light fittings, so all I had to do was swap out the lamps for ebooks.

After a couple of hours of work it started to dawn on me how pernickety this theme was. It doesn’t even use the usual Hugo paradigm where new content is considered to be posts. It considered new content to be products, so changing themes would be hard with something so non-standard.

I changed my mind, and instead plumped for a theme called “hugo-nederburg-theme”, which virtually trips of the tongue compared to the other theme I tried.

I got the theme working, and next on the list is selling digital downloads. I don’t just want to send people to Amazon from this platform, I want them to be able to buy the book they are interested in directly from SpiralcatBooks.com. I started my research at PracticalEcomerce.com and there are a lot of options there.

Galaxy Dog is an epic space opera. What starts as an ordinary invasion of an alien planet, brings to light an ancient archaeological site of huge importance.
