Digital books are becoming ever more popular, but unlike real books, you cannot do what I like to do and pick up the entire novel in a book shop to read samples chosen at random as you flick through the book. In a bookshop, it is quite easy to pull up a chair and read the entire chapter if you want, to see if it is compelling enough to purchase it.
When you are interested in an eBook, a pretty good substitute for this is to download a few free sample chapters. A free sample like this usually comprises the first twenty percent of the book. This might not work well sometimes, for example if the book has a large table of contents and a big forward, meaning you might not even get to read the first chapter. A self-help book might have the entire first half of the sample be nothing but promotional testimonials - the kind of blurbs you sometimes see on the back cover of a paperback.
It’s different with a sci-fi novel like Galaxy Dog, of course, because it gets straight into the action - a planetary assault being planned in the ready room of a dropship - and the sample really does give you a good idea of what to expect from the book. Smashwords, one of the outlets Galaxy Dog is available from, features sample chapters, but I thought I would create a way to get some sample chapters directly from this website, without having to go over to Smashwords.
For the sake of simplicity, I have decided I will only provide the book in the EPUB format, though more formats can be found over at Smashwords. The EPUB format is the most widely supported vendor-independent e-book format - according to Wikipedia - It is supported by the largest number of e-Readers, including Amazon Kindle Fire. I figure most people will be using EPUB anyway, but feel free to tell me how wrong I am in the comments section.
I’m starting with just one of my books, Galaxy Dog, and I’ll create a special page on the website with all the sample downloads, as soon as I have a few set up like this. So here is the first sample chapter, Download the first quarter of Galaxy Dog.
I learned how to create this download link at Stack Exchange, a website I keep coming back to learn technical stuff. So download the sample chapters for just a taste of the sci-fi adventure that is Galaxy Dog, but watch out, you might like this taster so much that you end up buying the whole book. Not everyone is familiar with Smashwords, of course, so Galaxy Dog is also available from Amazon, a service I’m pretty sure everyone has heard of. See the link below.
